In the second Avalon slot machine from Microgaming, The Quest for the Grail, the player will encounter a game which is much more modern, with 243 ways to win instead of lines, but which also has a lot more features than its predecessor. I’m not necessarily impressed with the graphics which were chosen in this case, I’ve seen much better follow-ups for a game, but at least there is an improvement in the other areas. The top payout has gone down though, now offering at most $750.

Betting & Jackpots

You’re getting a slot with 243 ways to win, so you will use a fixed number of coins to get them all covered by the wager. You work with multiples of 30 coins, going up to 150 coins for one round. The line bet in that case would be from 1 to 5 coins. There is the coin size as well, but you can only take it from $0.01 to $0.05. You can spend $0.25 per line at most, with the total bet at $7.50. The game is very cheap to play, but the rewards aren’t that great either.

The top jackpot in Avalon II will give you back $750, through the scatter symbol. Now, the game does have multipliers in its features, as high as 6x, so there is potential for more, but in the base game the payout doesn’t go higher than that.

The list of features is quite long in this game, but in the end most of them are offered through the same scatter symbol, the Grail bonus. As a scatter, it rewards you for having enough of its symbols, not for their position, and it’s the one that gives away the top jackpot of 100x the bet.

3, 4 or 5 such symbols also trigger the features of Avalon II, which will give you a different bonus game or round of free spins, each time you trigger it. You advance through the story whenever you trigger the bonus feature, and the slot keeps it interesting by varying what kind of feature you get.

You start off with a feature where you have to reforge Excalibur, then you move on to free spins with wilds that have multipliers. The third feature is either a round of free spins with trailing wilds, or a bonus game. The fourth level gives you a bonus game, and then you get free spins with rolling reels, a bonus game where you defeat a knight to get the Grail, and finally you reach the Isle of Avalon and you spin a wheel to get a prize.

There are additional features to take advantage of, in addition to the free spins and bonus games which the scatter will trigger for you. There are appearances of Merlin, happening at random, bringing you multipliers or prizes. There is also an expanding wild, in the form of Lady of the Lake, appearing on reel 3.

A regular wild is also part of the game, a substitute for regular symbols and a way to win a prize of up to $500.

The design of Avalon II looks slightly more modern, but that’s not automatically a good thing. I did enjoy the drawing style from the first slot, and this one feels different, computer made, but not improved.

I’d recommend you try out both games, but if you want to be entertained, Avalon II does it better with the many features it can trigger for you in the long run.
