Pontoon Rules

Pontoon is very popular in Brittain since it is the British version of Blackjack also known as 21. Blackjack has several different types of games available all with different rules and slight tweaks to the way the game is played. Blackjack usually seats about 5 to 8 players in land based casinos. During the game of Pontoon, the amount of decks used depends on how many players there are at the table. Pontoon is very similar to Blackjack in most aspects. The game begins with the players making their wagers. Players will then have their cards dealt to them first the dealer will receive his card face up and then from left to right the players will also receive one card face up. On the second round of cards which are also dealt from left to right, the players receive their cards face down. In some casinos the players are allowed to surrender and leave the game if they feel their hands are not strong enough.

In the game of Pontoon as with other Blackjack variations, the object is to beat the dealer without going over 21 points. Card values are extremely important in this game. Players cards rangin from 2 – 10 are counted at face value, Jack Queens & Kings are worth 10 points and Aces are worth 10 points or 1 point depending on the hand available. Players may also want to familiarize themselves with the terms used throughout the 21 games.

Bust: When the player or the dealer goes over 21

Stand: When the player has a hand they don’t want to add more cards to because they are close to 21 already.

Hit: When the player would like another card from the dealer on their turn. This is typically when the player has less than 16 points on hand.

Double: When the player would like another card and has high hopes that they will win the hand without a bust, this is called a double down. The player will place an additional wager and ask for another card.

Split: The player will have a pair in their hand, in the game of Blackjack the player is able to split those hands and place a second ante bet for the new hand. The first hand comes first the player will hit until they are satisfied and then the next hand is played.

Blackjack: Ace & 10 Card.

Five Card Trick: When the player has five cards that total or equal less than 21. The maximum times to hit on a hand is five times thus the name, five card trick.
